loose crystals in your inner ear.

BPPV is a mechanical problem in the inner ear. It occurs when some of the calcium carbonate crystals (otoconia) that are normally embedded in gel in the utricle become dislodged and migrate into one or more of the 3 fluid-filled semicircular canals, where they are not supposed to be.

BPPV happens when tiny crystals of calcium carbonate in one part of your inner ear become dislodged and float into another part. That doesn’t sound too serious, but small head movements cause the loose crystals to move, triggering your inner-ear sensors to send mixed messages to your brain.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) may go away in a few weeks by itself. If treatment is needed, it usually consists of head exercises (Epley and Semont maneuvers ). … In rare cases, surgery may be used to treat BPPV.

Dizziness can be dehabitating. Treatment can make the problem go away quicker. Also, if you come to our clinic, we can help to determine the cause of your dizziness, and rule out other causes. Dr. Nate has had expensive special training in this area, and can help you find a resolution to your problem.
