What is an MRI?

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a test that uses powerful magnets, radio waves, and a computer to make detailed pictures of the inside of your body.

MRI machine

Your doctor can use this test to diagnose you or to see how well you’ve responded to treatment. Unlike X-rays and computed tomography (CT) scans, MRIs don’t use the damaging ionizing radiation of X-rays.

MRI Uses
An MRI helps a doctor diagnose a disease or injury, and it can monitor how well you’re doing with a treatment. MRIs can be done on different parts of your body. It’s especially useful for looking at soft tissues and the nervous system.

An MRI of the brain and spinal cord can help find many things, including:

  • Blood vessel damage
  • Brain injury
  • Cancer
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Stroke
  • Eye problems
  • Inner ear problems

When you are treated at Advanced Medical of Florida, we will determine whether it is recommended that you have X-rays or an MRI. Sometimes it is recommended and some times it’s not. If it is recommended, we will help you make arrangements to get it done, and then will use the information in your treatment plan.

Physical Therapy and X-Rays

You may be wondering if you need X-rays before beginning physical therapy.

x-ray

In general, you do not need advanced diagnostic tests like an X-ray or MRI before starting physical therapy. If your pain or functional limitation came on gradually, or for no apparent reason, then your condition most likely does not warrant these tests right away, and it is safe to participate in physical therapy.

When you have your initial visit with our clinic, we will determine whether we recommend an X-ray or MRI. Very often, if is not necessary. If we feel it is recommended, we will work with your insurance company and help you obtain the proper authorization to proceed with getting the imaging done. Then we will review the results and incorporate the information into your treatment plan.

You may be wondering if your physical therapist can write you a prescription or give a pain relieving injection. While these things are not normally involved in treatment, we have an advantage in that we have a medical doctor on our staff, and when these things are required, we can make them happen.

Headaches

If you are suffering from headaches, you know how debilitating they can be. They can really interfere with your daily routine and put a cramp in your day. You may not know much about the different types of headaches.

man with headache

TENSION HEADACHES

A tension headache is probably the most common type people experience. Some of the common characteristics of a tension headache include; a pressing or tightening feeling, bilateral location, mild to moderate intensity, pain lasting from 30 minutes to one week. Tension headaches don’t normally include nausea or vomiting, but they may include light or sound sensitivity. The presence of tension headaches is not attributed to another health disorder.

MIGRAINE HEADACHES

Migraine headaches aren’t as common as tension headaches and they are often mistaken for something else. Quite often, a sufferer will attribute any bad headache pain to a migraine, but this isn’t always the case. Migraine is a condition that can be described as a recurrent headache that lasts up to 72 hours, featuring unilateral pulsating pain of moderate to severe intensity. Migraine pain includes nausea and/or sensitivity to light, and it is often made worse with normal physical activity.

CLUSTER HEADACHES

Cluster headaches are quite different from both tension headaches and migraines, occurring in only about 1% of the population. While most migraine sufferers are women, men between 20 and 40 are the main recipients of cluster headaches. This type of headache produces severe pain around the eyes or along the side of the head. Attacks usually last from 15 minutes up to 3 hours and have been known to occur 8 times in a single day. Tearing, forehead sweating, and nasal congestion may accompany cluster headaches. The intense pain makes some sufferers restless or agitated during the attack.
