Techniques Used in Physical Therapy for Chronic Pain Management

Physical therapy is a crucial component of chronic pain management. There are several techniques that physical therapists use to help patients manage their pain effectively. One common technique is manual therapy, which involves hands-on techniques such as joint mobilization, soft tissue mobilization, and manual stretching. These techniques help improve joint mobility, reduce muscle tension, and alleviate pain.

Physical therapy

Another technique used in physical therapy for chronic pain management is therapeutic exercise. Physical therapists design exercise programs tailored to each patient’s specific needs and goals. These exercises aim to improve strength, flexibility, and endurance while also reducing pain and improving overall function. Examples of therapeutic exercises include stretching, strengthening exercises, and cardiovascular exercises.

Modalities are also commonly used in physical therapy for chronic pain management. These include heat therapy, cold therapy, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and laser therapy. Heat therapy helps relax muscles and increase blood flow, while cold therapy reduces inflammation and numbs the area. Electrical stimulation can help reduce pain by blocking pain signals, and ultrasound and laser therapy promote tissue healing and reduce pain.

In addition to these techniques, physical therapists may also use manual traction, which involves gently pulling on the spine or limbs to relieve pressure on the affected area. They may also incorporate techniques such as dry needling, which involves inserting thin needles into trigger points to release tension and reduce pain.

It’s important to note that the specific techniques used in physical therapy for chronic pain management may vary depending on the individual’s condition and the therapist’s expertise. Physical therapists often employ a combination of these techniques to provide comprehensive care and help patients effectively manage their chronic pain.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a safe, minimally-invasive, and drug-free treatment that involves inserting sterile, disposable needles in specific points on the body.

We can also perform acustimulation, which amplifies the effects of acupuncture by connecting the needles to an electrical stimulation device. This allows for deeper stimulation of acupuncture points. It feels similar to the electrical stimulation used in a TENS unit; it is just as safe, but more specific to the area being treated.

Finally, we can perform dry needling, where the needles are inserted directly into trigger points. The needles are then manipulated to release scar tissue at the trigger point.

There are many benefits to receiving acupuncture or dry needling, such as pain relief, decreased inflammation, increased range of motion, decreased muscle tightness or spasms, improved sleep quality, stress relief, and increased ability to perform activities of daily living.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is a form of alternative medicine mostly concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine.

spine

Treatment typically consists of a spinal manipulation or adjustment by applying a controlled force into joints that have become less mobile.

We also offer gentle chiropractic treatment which involves our decompression tables. These state-of-the-art tables provide gentle traction to take the pressure off the discs and the nerves. Not only does the table feel great, but it can permanently resolve your painful spine condition!

Chiropractic care is a form of alternative medicine mostly concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine.

Chiropractors treatment consists of a spinal manipulation, sometimes referred to as a chiropractic adjustment. The purpose of a spinal manipulation is to restore joint mobility by applying a controlled force into the joints that have become hypomobile – or restricted in their movement and possibly pinching a nerve – as a result of a tissue injury or poor posture/ergonomics.

My Story

Guest Blogger – Kathleen.

Hi, I’m Kathleen. I have been debilitated by a back injury for 30 years. I have been unable to work. I have had to take pain medication. I have spent many full days flat on my back because of back pain. I can’t tell you how many events I had missed because of my back. Particularly when my kids were growing up.

Kathleen

Kathleen – actual patient

My friend had been bugging me to go see Dr. Brett. My friend had experience miraculous results with Dr. Brett who had treated him for a back condition and a shoulder condition. I told my friend that there was no use. I had been treated by physical therapists and chiropractors and orthopedic doctors and pain specialists for 30 years, with no results. I did not believe that Dr. Brett could help me, but I went to see him just so my friend would quit bugging me.

Sure enough, when I went to see Dr. Brett, we couldn’t do much in terms of therapy because my back pain was so bad, and almost any kind of movement would cause my back to spasm.

Advanced Medical of Florida is a multi-specialty clinic. Dr. Brett sent me to Dr. Miguel Attias, MD, Anesthesiologist, and Interventional Pain Specialist. I had been given injections before, in the spine, between the 3rd and 4th vertebrae, with no improvement. Dr. Attias told me that he though I had been mis-diagnosed and gave me an injection in a different location, close to my hip bone. Within hours of the procedure, I felt like the back pain was completely gone, and I felt like a new woman. I haven’t had a pain pill since the procedure. It is a miracle.

Now I am looking forward to physical therapy to strengthen my back from years of inactivity. Next week, I am going to apply for a job. (I love working, but haven’t been able to work for 30 years).

Why did I get a better result from the doctors at Advanced Medical of Florida? Because they care more and they listen better.

What is Neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy, often shortened to neuropathy, is a general term describing disease affecting the peripheral nerves, meaning nerves beyond the brain and spinal cord. Damage to peripheral nerves may impair sensation, movement, gland, or organ function depending on which nerves are affected; in other words, neuropathy affecting motor, sensory, or autonomic nerves result in different symptoms. More than one type of nerve may be affected simultaneously. Peripheral neuropathy may be acute (with sudden onset, rapid progress) or chronic (symptoms begin subtly and progress slowly), and may be reversible or permanent.

This nerve disorder causes pain and numbness for millions of Americans. How do you know if you have peripheral nerve damage?

The symptoms of neuropathy may come on quickly or develop over many years – may start gradually and then get worse. These symptoms can include numbness, tingling, pain, and even decreased sensation.

Are you experiencing symptoms such as burning, tingling or numbness in your feet or hands? If so, it could be attributed to a condition called Peripheral Neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy is a nerve disorder that affects millions of Americans. It is estimated that 1 out of 17 Americans are found to have neuropathy symptoms.

There are many different kinds of peripheral nerve disorders or neuropathies. Some are the result of disease such as diabetes, with 60 to 70 percent of diabetics experiencing some form of neuropathy symptoms. Side effects to certain medications, such as chemotherapy drugs or long-term cholesterol medication use, may result in neuropathy while others can be triggered by a virus infections. Regardless of how of the condition begins, it is imperative that this nerve disorder is evaluated, as soon as possible, to prevent permanent damage.
