  • Broken shoulder bone.
  • Dislocation of the shoulder.
  • Shoulder separation
  • Frozen shoulder, which occurs when the muscles, tendons, and ligaments inside the shoulder become stiff, making movement difficult and painful
  • Overuse or injury of nearby tendons, such as the bicep muscles of the arms
  • Nerve injury that leads to abnormal shoulder movement
  • Tears of the rotator cuff tendons
  • Poor shoulder posture and mechanics

We have treatments available specifically for posture. As we get older, this is increasingly something we should be concerned with.

Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of treatment in Ancient Chinese Medicine that dates back over 2,000 years ago. It is a safe, minimally-invasive, and a drug-free treatment that involves inserting sterile, disposable needles in specific points in the body to achieve desired results. After needles are safely inserted, they are left in for 15-20 min to allow stimulation to that area.

Acupuncture

In Ancient Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture aims to restore vital energy in the body known as Qi (chee). In western medicine, it is used to stimulate specific points in the body and attract blood flow to that area to promote healing.

What is AcuStimulation?

In addition to traditional acupuncture, we can amplify the effects by connecting the needles to an electrical stimulation device. This allows for deeper stimulation of acupuncture points or specific muscles. It feels similar to electrical stimulation used in a TENS unit; it is just as safe, but more specific to the area being treated.

The world Health Organization (WHO) listed the following symptoms, diseases and conditions that have been shown through controlled trials to be treated effectively by acupuncture:

  • Behavioral Health – addictions, depression, insomnia, stress
  • Cardiovascular – high blood pressure, stroke
  • Digestive – colitis, ulcers
  • Men’s Health – impotence, infertility
  • Pain – arthritis, back pain, headache
  • Respiratory – allergies, asthma, bronchitis, colds and flu, sinus infection
  • Skin – acne, eczema
  • Women’s Health – infertility, menopause, PMS
  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Tennis elbow
  • Knee pain
  • Periarthritis of the shoulder
  • Sprains
  • Facial pain (including craniomandibular disorders)
  • Headache
  • Dental pain
  • Tempromandibular (TMJ) dysfunction
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Induction of labor
  • Morning sickness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Postoperative pain
  • Hypertension
  • Adverse reactions to radiation or chemotherapy
  • Allergic rhinitis, including hay fever
  • Depression
  • primary dysmenorrhea
  • Acute and chronic gastritis

Balance and Gait Program

According to the CDC, each year, millions of older people—those 65 and older—fall. In fact, more than one out of four older people falls each year, but less than half tell their doctor. Falling once doubles your chances of falling again.

Falls Are Serious and Costly

. One out of five falls causes a serious injury such as broken bones or a head injury.

. Each year, 3 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries.

. Over 800,000 patients a year are hospitalized because of a fall injury, most often because of a head injury or hip fracture.

. Each year at least 300,000 older people are hospitalized for hip fractures.

. More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling, usually by falling sideways.

. Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries.

. In 2015, the total medical costs for falls totaled more than $50 billion.11 Medicare and Medicaid shouldered 75% of these costs.

Treatment of the Month

This month we are highlighting our BALANCE & GAIT PROGRAM! We love helping people walk better, reduce their fall risk, and improve their quality of life.

Our unique Balance & Gait Program has helped many people and gives you an opportunity to be evaluated for any abnormalities in your walking patterns. This program can help a wide range of people from geriatrics to athletes. We can work on fall prevention for the geriatric population and even perform running analysis utilizing videos for the athletic population.

Physical Therapy vs Chirporator

Advanced Medical of Florida is a multi-specialty clinic. We offer a variety of treatments. We offer both chiropractic care a physical therapy as well as having a medical doctor on staff who can provide injections for pain relief as well. You may be wondering what the difference is between chiropractic care versus physical therapy.

Physical therapy

Similarities between physical therapists and chiropractors may include:

  • Both have a degree in their respective fields.
  • Both may prescribe exercises to reduce pain and improve agility.
  • Both use electrical stimulation or heat.
  • Both use nonsurgical techniques to help you move better and feel better.

To become a chiropractor, you’ll need a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree from an accredited program, plus a state license that will allow you to practice.

To practice as a physical therapist in the U.S., you must earn a doctor of physical therapy degree from a Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy .

While it may seem that physical therapy and chiropractic care are the same, there are several differences between the two. Differences may include:

  • Chiropractors often perform manipulations for perceived or known spinal subluxations.
  • Chiropractors often attempt to correct spinal malalignment, believing that this is placing pressure on nerves.
  • Chiropractors often limit their treatment to the low back and neck, while physical therapists tend to be general practitioners who treat the spine and extremities.
  • Chiropractors routinely order X-rays to examine bony anatomy that helps guide treatment, while physical therapists use their clinical examination to make treatment decisions, and many do not rely on diagnostic imaging to guide treatment.
  • Chiropractors often offer nutrition advice, and many sell dietary supplements in their clinics.
  • Physical therapists often work to help you prevent injury.
  • Physical therapists often prescribe home exercise programs for their patients to perform daily in order to achieve their rehab goals.
  • Physical therapists work in a variety of settings like hospitals, schools, clinics, and nursing homes, while chiropractors typically only work in an outpatient clinic setting.
Both chiropractors and physical therapists have the goal of helping you move in pain-free ways, and both use different techniques and treatment paradigms to help you achieve that goal.
